Jes Gamble's interdisciplinary artistry invites audiences into a profound exploration of human memory and spirit, fostering intimate connections through her multifaceted creations. Her work transcends traditional boundaries, encompassing painting, photography, installation, sculpture, textiles, video, and wearable art. Through these diverse mediums, Gamble delves into complex themes such as feminism, psychology, and the intricate relationship between the body and internal experience.
Among many of Gamble's mediums photography for instance serves as a powerful vessel for site-specific performances, capturing the emotional journey from fear to empowerment. Her innovative use of fabric and erratic stitching evokes a rich tapestry of the human experience, articulating a dialogue of discomfort and resilience that resonates. The act of stitching, both in her tangible artwork and metaphorically, symbolizes the mending and marking of one’s soul and physical form, inviting viewers to reflect on their own narratives of healing and identity.
Born in 1981 in Memphis, TN, Gamble pursued her artistic education at Pennsylvania State University, receiving her BFA in painting and drawing in 2006, before earning her Master of Fine Arts from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 2011. Her work has been exhibited in prestigious venues, including The Barnes Foundation and The Philip and Muriel Berman Museum of Art, and she has garnered numerous grants, scholarships, and accolades, including the Sandra Karlin Award of Excellence.
In 2015, Gamble's artistry was recognized in the Art and Culture section of the PEW Charitable Trusts, State of the City, Philadelphia. Her recent exhibition at The Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris further underscores her impact within the contemporary art scene. Looking forward, Jes Gamble is poised to showcase her work in the two-person exhibition “Imago Refracted” in Rome, Italy, this October 2024, coinciding with the celebrated Rome Art Week.
